How words per minute are counted
A word counts as five characters, spaces included, which is how typing speed has been measured for decades. Only words typed correctly count towards your speed, so a fast but careless run scores lower. Characters per minute counts the same correct characters, so it is five times your words per minute. Raw speed counts everything you typed, and accuracy shows the share of keystrokes that were right.
What is a good typing speed?
Many people who type every day reach 35 to 45 words per minute. Around 60 WPM is fast for office work, and 80 WPM or more is the level of experienced touch typists. At first accuracy matters more than speed: aim for 95% and the speed will follow.
Real words for every language
The words come from lists of common words written for each language, with accents and special letters, so the test feels like the typing you do every day. Turn on Punctuation and capitals for a harder test with commas, periods and capital letters.
Questions and answers
Does the test work on phones?
Yes, but phone keyboards are slower and autocorrect can get in the way. For a result you can compare with other people’s, use a computer keyboard.
How do I convert words per minute to characters per minute?
Multiply by five: 40 WPM is about 200 correct characters per minute, spaces included. The test shows both numbers in the result.
Why is my accuracy lower than my correct words suggest?
Accuracy counts every keystroke, including letters you typed wrong and then corrected. Correct words only look at the finished words.
How can I type faster?
Learn to touch type with all ten fingers, keep your eyes on the screen and practice for a few minutes every day. Short daily sessions work better than one long one.
